David Holly has spent over 60 years playing and teaching tennis, sharing his knowledge, skills, passion and love of the game with thousands of junior and adult players.  He began playing tennis at age 8 on the Stono Park Playground in Charleston, and by age 10 was a member of the Charleston Junior Travelling Team competing throughout the south winning tournaments in singles and doubles.  He attended St. Andrews High School, where he played tennis and was a member of a state championship basketball team.

Playing Career:

  • Ranked #2 in singles and #1 in doubles in the state in 3 different age divisions, and was top 10 in the South four years.
  • Won five titles at the Palmetto Championships in Belton, including sweeps in 16U singles and doubles in 1968 and 18U singles and doubles in 1969.
  • Member of the South Carolina Junior Davis Cup team four years.
  • Received a scholarship to Furman University where he was team captain and All-Southern Conference and the Paladins won Southern Conference championships in 1969 and 1972.
  • Won the #3 Singles and #1 doubles Southern Conference championships in 1972 and the #2 doubles championships in 1973.

Teaching Career:

  • Worked as an assistant pro at Furman Tennis Camp and Green Valley Country Club.  Following graduation from Furman became the Head Tennis Professional at Shadow Oaks Racquet Club.
  • Hired as the Head Tennis Professional at the Greenville Country Club in 1974, and became the club’s Tennis Director in 1986.
  • Worked tirelessly to promote tennis at the club, local, and state levels until his retirement in 2017.
  • Taught the game to countless junior tournament players during his 40+ years at Greenville Country Club.  His players won 30 Belton titles and seven Southern titles.
  • Had similar success with adults as Greenville Country Club produced several individual tournament champions and league champions at the local, state and southern levels.
  • Managed one of the south’s finest teaching staffs and focused not only on development but also on sportsmanship and a love for the game.

Contributions to USTA South Carolina and Awards:

  • Served as Tournament Director for over 100 sanctioned tournaments, including the Marion Harris American Cancer Society Adult Classic, the Wilton McKinney Fall Classic and the South Carolina Junior Clay Court Championships.
  • Supported adult league tennis and hosted numerous USTA South Carolina League Championships.
  • Promoted Junior Team Tennis and Quick Start tennis.
  • Greenville Country Club was the 1995 USTA South Carolina Club of the Year.
  • 2002 USTA South Carolina Pro of the Year.
  • The Marion Harriss tournament was named USTA-SC Adult Tournament of the Year twice and was the 2008 USTA Southern Charity Event of the Year and raised over $900,000 for the American Cancer Society during his 31 years directing the event.
