Meet the 2023 South Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame Inductees

David Holly began playing tennis at age 8 in Charleston. He had an impressive junior career and was ranked #2 in South Carolina in Boy’s 14, 16, and 18 singles, and #1 in doubles. Quite notably, he was a five-time champion of the Palmetto Championships.

Holly played college tennis at Furman University, where he was team captain and won the Southern Conference Singles and Doubles Championships in 1972. As the Head Tennis Professional at Greenville Country Club for over 40 years, he has coached and mentored numerous juniors and adults to 30 Belton titles and 7 Southern titles.

Holly’s contributions have extended beyond the club level, serving as Tournament Director for over 100 sanctioned tournaments, including the prestigious Marion Harris American Cancer Society Adult Classic, and raising over $850,000 for the American Cancer Society. A strong advocate of USTA League tennis, he has organized several USTA League Championships in South Carolina.

Chuck Waldron began his tennis journey at age 6, and for over five decades, he has dedicated himself to the sport as a player, coach, and mentor.  He played collegiately at Presbyterian College, where he received the prestigious William Miller Holman Robert’s Memorial Award.

For over 50 years, Waldron has developed great tennis players in the Clinton and Belton areas, prioritizing not only tennis skills but also personal development and sportsmanship. He has coached over 115 junior players who have gone on to play college tennis.  He was the founder of several associations and programs such as the Rufus Sadler Tennis Foundation, the SC Professional Tennis Association, the Palmetto Jr. Novice Tennis Circuit, and the Maynard Cup.  Waldron has also been a long-time volunteer at the local, state and section levels of USTA.
